Stan Getz Community

Remembering Stan...

I am always on the lookout for rare or hard to find recordings from Stan.
This would be a great place to talk about our latest discoveries.

Well to start the ball rolling. About a month ago I was told about
the Gerald Wilson Big Band Modern reissue. 15 tracks altogether.
Tracks 1-8 are a reissue from a 1954 studio session. Tracks 9-15
are a previously unissued 1950 concert in San Francisco's Veterans Memorial
with guest stars Wardell Gray, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
Each one of these great sax players is given a showcase
tune and they finish the concert all blowing great solos and trading fours
on Hollywood Freeway.

Stan plays the beautiful "Out Of Nowhere". The way he quotes Broadway is just
too much;)

Hello Denis, how are you? I love to learn more about anything that has to do with great music, especially Mr Stan Getz:) You have provided so much information and I am grateful for that. All the musicians here exceed excellence and I love to come here often and just travel around to listen. Thank you for the blessing you are:) I am very humbled to be a part here. I sing and write songs, but as for any instruments? The piano and guitar I play by ear. The sax is my ultimate dream instrument. At 46...I think I have enough wind to take a few lessons.;) lol Hey its never to late They may run me out of the neighborhood, but thats a chance...I am willing to take ha ha! Blessings in abundance to you.
Thanks so much for your kind words Joan. It's really appreciated. But you know what ?
The thing I love the most, is to listen to this marvellous music. There are really some gems out there. To me that's the real thing;)
If there are any tracks you would like to listen to, let me know.
Yes this place is really special. I think we all feel a deep affection for this great man.
I am 59 and still learning and driven by this music. Its never too late;)
As long as it brings you happiness you can't go wrong.

My best to you.
Denis
Stan Getz in Pescara Italy.

This is a July 23 1983 gig at the 4th Pescara Jazz Festival.Absolutely moving music.
Private recording.

The personnel is

Stan, Kenny Barron, Yasuhito Mori and Ben Riley.
What a swinging band.

The following tracks can be heard

Feijada 11:32
Yours And Mine 8:10
Just Friends 10:12
Soul Eyes 8:01
Yesterdays 9:51
On Green Dolphin Street 7:12
People Time 5:39
Joanne Julia 5:28
I Love You 9:27

My all time favorite is Just Friends of course;) where Stan just loves playing on those changes. So beautiful.
Kenny Barron really shines in one of his best solos.
No wonder Stan described him as "the other half of my heart".

Cheers
Denis
Hi All,

I took a look at the video page and I may be mistaken, but I do not see a video which I just posted on my page here. Stan with Lou Levy, Ray Brown, and Ed Thigpen, 1961 in Italy performing "Woody 'n You." It is part of a larger video of this concert, including the Oscar Peterson Trio and Roy Eldridge.

Thanks. This is absolutely beautiful.
I can't believe this.

Lush Life
Chick Corea (p) Louis Bellson (dr) Ray Brown (b) Stan Getz , Zoot Sims (ts) George Benson (g) Lionel Hampton (vibes)

Radio broadcast from the Netherlands.

Six beautiful tracks. A varied program from Lisa to Gigi Gryce's Stan's Blues.
A 1979 concert in the Netherlands.

The tracks

Lisa, Round Midnight, one Andy Laverne original Big Tiny Little, Kali-Au and Hotcha and the incredible Stan's Blues.

Awe inspiring music really. The musicians are always out on the limb. Playing the way jazz is supposed to be played.
Stan, Andy Laverne on piano, Chuck Loeb on guitar, Victor Jones drums unknown bass.

"A very classic jazz ballad by Thelonious Monk, Round Midnight" as introduced by Stan
To end it a rousing version of Stan's Blues where Stan just raises the roof and really sounds
like the stompin tenor that he is;). Chuck and Andy have beautiful solos also.

Cheers
Denis
