Rare Stan Getz Recordings and Videos.

I am always on the lookout for rare or hard to find recordings from Stan.
This would be a great place to talk about our latest discoveries.

Well to start the ball rolling. About a month ago I was told about
the Gerald Wilson Big Band Modern reissue. 15 tracks altogether.
Tracks 1-8 are a reissue from a 1954 studio session. Tracks 9-15
are a previously unissued 1950 concert in San Francisco's Veterans Memorial
with guest stars Wardell Gray, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
Each one of these great sax players is given a showcase
tune and they finish the concert all blowing great solos and trading fours
on Hollywood Freeway.

Stan plays the beautiful "Out Of Nowhere". The way he quotes Broadway is just
too much;)

One of the greatest band.
On stage at Carnegie Hall.

Stan, Jimmy Raney, Duke Jordan, Bill Crow and Frank Isola.

Six tracks: There Will Never Be Another You, Strike Up The Band, Sweetie Pie, Moonlight in Vermont, Stella By Starlight, Cherokee

Stan is heard dedicating the last tune to Ben Webster "one of my favorite tenorman sitting right over here".

There is a Norman Granz Jam Session recording with Stan, Count Basie, Freddy Green, John Simmons, Buddy Rich, Harry Edison, Willie Smith, Benny Carter and Wardell Grey (another tenor monster) Lady Be Good swings up a storm, Stan takes the 1st solo. You can find it on Amazon.

Stan in concert in Canada


This was a broadcast on FM radio.
It's a program which is still running now
its called "Jazz Sur Le Vif" a wonderful program. It runs weeknights.
But on one fabulous night somebody taped it right from his radio and
here it is in all its glory and wonderful acoustics.

Fortunately we have plenty of videos on Youtube and DailyMotion. Every day it seems
something new comes up.

well maybe I can quote Stan Levey which puts it way better then I ever could.
"The horn was an expression of his head. There were no barriers. The music just
came rolling out".

Well it is certainly that on "Lover Come Back To Me", where it is Stan all the way.
Beautifully backed by a stellar rhythm section, churning out
chorus after chorus of endless beauty.

These sessions are treasures.
The sound fixed in time, a night as so many others where Stan put in another night
of work. Nothing like hearing the radio announcer from the club. It's a complete immersion.
For one fleeting moment we're thrown back in time.;)
