Rare Stan Getz Recordings and Videos.

I am always on the lookout for rare or hard to find recordings from Stan.
This would be a great place to talk about our latest discoveries.

Well to start the ball rolling. About a month ago I was told about
the Gerald Wilson Big Band Modern reissue. 15 tracks altogether.
Tracks 1-8 are a reissue from a 1954 studio session. Tracks 9-15
are a previously unissued 1950 concert in San Francisco's Veterans Memorial
with guest stars Wardell Gray, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
Each one of these great sax players is given a showcase
tune and they finish the concert all blowing great solos and trading fours
on Hollywood Freeway.

Stan plays the beautiful "Out Of Nowhere". The way he quotes Broadway is just
too much;)

Here we are treated to a beautiful performance, as if we
were sitting right there that night with such a lucky audience.

A welcome rendition of a seldom heard Frank Loesser standard
"Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year" is also heard.
How a propos ? (-:

Again, the wonderful interplay between Bob and Stan is also heard on
Sweetie Pie. Stan is charging full ahead into seven full choruses of pure
delight.

So nice to hear Bob Brookmeyer featured on "Darn That Dream".
Beautiful sound and inventiveness.

Chicago Jazz Festival 1985 Tribute to Zoot Sims


On March 23 1985 we lost Zoot Sims one of the first Brothers.
Al Cohn, Herbie Steward, Stan, Jimmy Guiffre, Serge Chaloff, Gerry Mulligan
made up that section at one time or another.

Later that summer at the Chicago Jazz Festival there was a tribute to Zoot.
Fortunately this was aired on NPR.

Fortunately here is the audio portion surviving from this session.
Here we can hear Stan in a very relaxed date. Accompanied by very
compatible players we are treated to a beautiful set.
Now around that time Stan's working band included Andy Laverne, Mike Richmond
and Victor Jones. But here he is ably backed by all-stars swedish players.

Lars Sjöten piano, Georg Riedel bass and Rune Carlsson drums.

Hi Denis,

Yes, the Dusseldorf 1960 concert is a great concert with some outstanding playing by Stan and everyone else. It is nice for jazz fans to have a complete music "picture" of what was happening in the jazz world almost 50 years ago! Sad that we won't have that ever again, but hopefully, we'll continue to see surprise releases of concert audio and/or video footage such as Dusseldorf.

A wonderful version of The Thrill is Gone. Stan was playing it quite frequently
in 1960. There are at least two other recorded versions by Stan around that time.

So true. Yes I think in a way we are lucky to be able to enjoy whatever else lies out there. Who would have thought about seeing Stan playing with John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb so many years after that concert. Incredible.
This is really satisfying.

The tracks are again a good sample of the repertoire played by Stan around that time.
To me "The End Of A Love Affair" is one of the most beautiful version I have ever heard.
Stan is simply magnificent. Playing with the melody. Weaving beautiful figures around it.
Solid work from all the guys in the band. Absolutely swinging.
