About me:
Grew up in Montclair, NJ., listening to my parent's Jazz albums. Especially Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing", featuring Gene Krupa's amazing drumming. Banged everything, boxes, pots, plates, (with dinner utensils.) Finally cobbled together a playable drum set by age 13. Had saved and payed for my Slingerland drum set by 14. Played Jazz mostly, but enjoyed playing Rock, Pop, Soul, Blues, Latin, etc.

Introduced to Stan Getz's music when a girl friend, (very hip for
her age), gave me 'Getz/Gilberto' at my birthday party. He became a favorite, including Jobim and the Gilberto's, for all time. I still enjoy his seemingly endless and effortless creativity, tone and lyricism on his tenor sax. Stan's higher register passages, born of the Lester Young tradition, are eerily similar to Paul Desmond's alto! None of this diminishes his miraculous originality and fluidity.

Living near NYC gave me the opportunities to see and hear an incredible array of artists from the aforementioned fields and beyond. I saw Stan Getz only once, at Art DeLuboff's Village Gate, in NYC. I was accompanied by a lovely young lady and we were both dazzled by Getz' phenomenal technique and romanticism. Perfect evening, right?! Through a memorable act of generosity, YES!

When the first set had ended, the waiter leaned over my shoulder with my bill for the evening. I reached for my wallet and realized, though I had paid to get into the 'Gate', I must have left the rest of my money at home. It's a good thing it was dark, so my date couldn't see the shades of red which were rushing to my face.

Not missing a beat, the waiter left for a few moments and returned, discretely whispering, "Mr. DeLuboff would like to see you.". The waiter then quietly led me to an office. Hi, I'm Art, how are you?, he asked, smiling, "What's your name?". "Woody", I replied.

Did you and your lady enjoy the show?". "Oh, yeah", I answered, with a picture in my mind of washing dishes and my girl friend careening back to Jersey in a bus or cab, or worse, being picked up by her Dad!!

"From Jersey?" - "Yes", I said.
"How ya' fixed for gas?"
"Fine"
"Take this ten dollars, go back and enjoy the next show, with drinks, on me-and have a safe drive back"

"Thanks so much Mr. DeLuboff, how do I repay you?
"Oh, here's my card. Just send a check when you can, have fun"

When I returned to our table, my friend inquired, "What was that all about?". "Just music business with Art, I replied, "let's stay for the second set."
