One day I heard a saxofonist playing and I falled in love
with his music. Who is he ? That's Stan Getz ! Don't you
know him ? Since that day I have all his records, read
everything about him and I am now a Tenor player.
Never heard such a sweeet sound that takes you deep in your soul and feelings ! great great and great !
I remember hearing a JATP lp from the 1950's. It featured Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, and others that I am sure I do not remember. I do not have the recording at this time. Anyway, Dizzy did his solo followed by someone other than Coleman Hawkins (I think). Coleman followed immediately thereafter. He seemed to forget his solo and all the sudden, the sound went blank for the soloist. The rhythm section was still playing. Anyway, Getz came in and finished Hawkins solo in Hawkins style of playing and then Getz did his own solo in his style. All I can say is Wow!!
I think that Getz may be the finest tenor that I have ever heard. I cannot say that I always prefer his style of playing. Some of his playing in the mid-fifties with players like Brookmeyer (an almost chamber music approach) is boring to me. I also love avante garde players like Coltrane and Dolphy. To me, Coltrane was god. I love many, many musicians and Getz is one of them, but there are not many players that have their own immediately recognizable style, have traversed more than one style as part of their own development and progress, and can simply assume another person's style virtually with perfect precision. Getz was an amazing stylist and player. His playing at the end was some of the most enjoyable playing I think he ever did. Some players get stale after time, Getz got more relaxed and just kept swinging.
