Paul, thanks for that beautiful pic of Bud.
You know I remember watching a video of Bud playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
He was with Jimmy Heath, Sonny Fortune and Gary Bartz for the front line.
They were playing Doxy, and let me tell you he gave them a run for their money. (-:
A beautiful player.
He also had a great comment on Stan. Let me quote
"He also declared, with unbowed assertiveness, that Stan Getz was the first and only person
to have mastered the saxophone totally. 'Many people will say, what about Charlie Parker,
what about John Coltrane? But they were masters of what they put into the saxophone.
Stan was master of the instrument.'”
Denis, very pleased you feel the same way about Bud Shank. His comment about Stan Getz and the mastery of the sax is priceless. I began to acquire his recordings on the Contemporary label in the fifties. He was more popular on the West Coast as were many of his soul mates. I read that he was in the recording studio the day before he passed away. I also read that Bob Cooper died on the Hollywood freeway on his way home from making a new recording. There must be something magical about music. I sure hope so.
