Stan Getz was a large influence in my tenor playing. Like myself, Stan started playing tenor sax at the age of 13. He, also like myself, had spent up to 8 hours a day practicing his tenor. My music teacher constantly told me "Practice Makes Perfect" later on in school I was taught "No Ones Perfect". Hmmm, confuse a kid, why don't ya. Anyway, What I loved most about Stan was his Sambas and Bossa Novas. He was known for his cool jazz sound, and became popular while playing with Woody Herman and later Horrace Silver, Johny Smith, and Oscar Peterson. He also played along with, Stan Kenton, Jimmy Dorsey, Chet Baker, Roy Haynes, Nat King Cole, Lionel Hampton, Bill Evans Gerry Mulligan and Chick Corea and his recordings over all the years have led him to play with so many artists that I couldn't begin to list them all. I hope you enjoy listenening to some of Stan's music I have compiled here in this blog. Lou
////People Time...Kenny Barron and Getz...In 1987, Stan Getz was told he had cancer and was given six months to live. This concert was recorded in 1991 eleven months before he died. He and Kenny Barron had been muscial partners for many years by then - this rendition of Benny Carter's "People Time" is moving indeed.////
