Remembering Stan...

I am always on the lookout for rare or hard to find recordings from Stan.
This would be a great place to talk about our latest discoveries.

Well to start the ball rolling. About a month ago I was told about
the Gerald Wilson Big Band Modern reissue. 15 tracks altogether.
Tracks 1-8 are a reissue from a 1954 studio session. Tracks 9-15
are a previously unissued 1950 concert in San Francisco's Veterans Memorial
with guest stars Wardell Gray, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
Each one of these great sax players is given a showcase
tune and they finish the concert all blowing great solos and trading fours
on Hollywood Freeway.

Stan plays the beautiful "Out Of Nowhere". The way he quotes Broadway is just
too much;)

Gerald Wilson's Big Band Modern is available on Amazon.
A night at Birdland
The date Jan 23 1955.
Beautiful music made on that night. But the
tapes were rolling. Aren't we lucky ?

The personnel
Stan, Tony Fruscella trumpet, John Williams piano , Bill Anthony bass
and Frank Isola drums.

The tracks:

Get Happy, Dear Old Stockholm, Pernod.

These were issued under Tony Fruscella's name.
Pernod - (Jazz Factory JFCD22804)

or Tony Fruscella Complete Live Recordings on the Jazz Factory label.

On a side note the Complete Live Recordings has a great session from
the Open Door in 1953 with Tony Fruscella and Brew Moore on tenor.

Stan Getz Live in Bangkok
Two beautiful tracks with a very responsive audience.
Recorded on Nov 11 1967, Rama Hotel in Bangkok.

This is a bit more than six months after he had recorded the
Sweet Rain album.

Now with some of his old cohorts from the late fifties early sixties
we have a lovely version of Chick Corea's Windows and
Sweet Georgia Brown taken at a brisk tempo.

Stan ,Jan Johansson piano, George Riedel bass, Egil Johansen drums.

These tracks were first issued on the Philology Label, Sweetie Pie CD.

Denis

Audio quality is quite good for that time.

This was issued on Zim Records(ZM-1007);

Lover Man

Marvellous album. Recorded at the Jazz Festival in Bologna Italy on Nov 14 1974.
Barely a month after replacing his drummer and bassist.

Stan, Albert Dailey piano, George Mraz bass, Billy Hart drums.
Only three tracks on that vinyl LP.
Don't know if that's been issued as a CD.

Lester Left Town, Lover Man and Times Lie.

Issued on the Moon Label.

Billie Holiday and Stan Getz

Recorded at Storyville in Boston on
October 29 1951.

Stan backing up Billie Holiday. Of course Stan
is not taking any solos, strictly playing obligatos.

The tracks are

Ain't Nobody's Business, Lover Come Back To Me and
You're Driving Me Crazy.

5 min 51 seconds of music from Stan and Billie together.
That's all we have as far as I know.
Maybe somewhere some other recordings exist ?

The personnel is
Buster Harding piano, John Fields bass and Marquis Foster
drums.

From the Billie Holiday at Storyville CD

Hi Denis
I only have 2 videos of Stan:The winery concert and the Munich concert.
Living in Australia we dont have the same access to many of these DVD's
Could you possibly let me know what else is available.
Cheers
Geoff
Hi Geoff,

Here are the only Videos(DVD) I could find

- Stan Getz and Chet Baker In Stockholm Feb 1983. Very hard to get. Was only available in Europe. Released by KJ Jazz.
- Stan Getz The Last Recording. Concert in Munich
- Stan Getz Vintage Getz. Recorded at Robert Mondavi's Vineyards.
- Cool Summers Stan Getz & Alto Madness. Recorded at the Paul Masson Vineyards.
- Stan Getz Live. This is a duplicate of the Cool Summers DVD.
- Jazz Icons John Coltrane Live in 1960,61 & 65. This includes a session with Stan Getz. (Hackensack and a Ballad Medley)

That's all I could find.
Fortunately we have plenty of videos on Youtube and DailyMotion. Every day it seems
something new comes up.

Denis
JATP in Dusseldorf March 28 1960.
From Rheinhalle.

This is the same date when Stan and John Coltrane played on that now famous video which is very popular on YouTube.
Stan brought his band to the concert.

Stan Getz,ts Jan Johansson,p
Ray Brown,b Ed Thigpen,dr

Playing five beautiful tracks.
Stan is heard introducing some of them.

Out of Nowhere 10:21
The Thrill Is Gone 6:50
Out of Nowhere 9:10
Woody'n You 7:42
Unknown title 7:56

Since Out Of Nowhere is heard twice, this might come from a different date then March 28.
To my knowledge these tracks have never been issued as part of the JATP concert or
anywhere else.

A wonderful version of The Thrill is Gone. Stan was playing it quite frequently
in 1960. There are at least two other recorded versions by Stan around that time.
