Remembering Stan...

Rare Stan Getz Recordings and Videos.

I am always on the lookout for rare or hard to find recordings from Stan.
This would be a great place to talk about our latest discoveries.

Well to start the ball rolling. About a month ago I was told about
the Gerald Wilson Big Band Modern reissue. 15 tracks altogether.
Tracks 1-8 are a reissue from a 1954 studio session. Tracks 9-15
are a previously unissued 1950 concert in San Francisco's Veterans Memorial
with guest stars Wardell Gray, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
Each one of these great sax players is given a showcase
tune and they finish the concert all blowing great solos and trading fours
on Hollywood Freeway.

Stan plays the beautiful "Out Of Nowhere". The way he quotes Broadway is just
too much;)

From two dates in June 1957, Stan Live from the Village Vanguard.
This is the time when Stan was playing with Mose Allison. The "Soft Swing" album had not been recorded yet.

We can even hear Leonard Feather with the radio announcer.

Between these two dates Stan found the time to record with Dizzie Gillespie the "Sittin' In" Session.

Denis/Pascal,

I wish I had the $ to fly over to Germany or France and pick up my copy TODAY!!!! That being said, hopefully, my copy of People Time will arrive sometime next week. Last time I ordered something from Europe, I had it within 7 business days so here's hoping...

hi Marla,

I ordered mine from Amazon.ca. Initially they had the shipping estimate of Dec 1.
Now it's been pushed back to Dec 14. I sure hope to get it before Christmas (-: LOL

Some additional information after listening to the "Jazz sur la Croisette Cannes 1958" recording in the INA archives.

The 4 quartet tracks can often be found on many LPs and CDs (Live in Paris 1958-1959, Live in Europe 1958, ...) with the following date and place of recording :
"L'Olympia", Paris, France, June-August, 1958
It's obviously a huge error... I compared the tracks of my CD "Live in Paris 1958-1959" with those of "Jazz sur la Croisette". They are the same !

The title played during the jam session is "Blues Walk", not "The Eternal Triangle".

The French Ina just released a new CD, "Jazz aux Champs-Elysées", with two unreleased Stan Getz tracks recorded in Paris on October 5th 1959, with the German SDR Big Band and the Orchestre Radio-Symphonique de Paris led by Michel Legrand. "I Remember Clifford" is a gentle ballad with strings and orchestra, and "Perdido" a hard swingin' big band number. Both the performance and the sound quality are great!

Available at the Ina web site (in French only), at Amazon.fr and even on iTunes (of course, I prefer the real CD, but it's usefull to listen to short excerpts).

It's a real good news. I heard one of them on the radio (TSF Jazz) and found the podcast on its website. I made a sample ("I Remember Clifford") that you can listen here.

The concert date is July 13, 1978.

A funny thing: Stan quotes (twice) "La Marseillaise", the French national anthem, the day before our national holiday (July 14)
