Remembering Stan...

I recently came up with an old piece of 8mm movie film that was in my Dads possessions when he died in the Fiji Islands in 1972.

The film was only 2 minutes and 38 seconds long but contained the only known video of my Dad and his 25' trimaran yacht "Tri-Tiki".

As nearly as I can tell the video was shot in New Zealand probably shortly after he bought the yacht there in 1971.

Being of the old silent 8mm film generation I decided to set the video to music.

After listening to many of my favorite jazz albums trying to find just the right piece of music I decided on the track "Captain Marvel" from the album of the same name.

I made my decision based on the fact that I had always thought of my father when listening to
the electric piano work of Chick Korea on this album. My father was a working Jazz pianist and although I had never heard him play (he left the states when I was two years old and never returned) for some reason I imagined that this would be his sound.

It wasnt until after completing the editing and transfering the video to DVD format that I discovered while reading the liner notes from the Captain Marvel cd that this album was recorded in 1972, the same year that my father died and very near the same time the old 8mm film was shot. I knew then that I had made the right selection!

Sorry for the rambling this story has probably turned into.
I just want to encourage all you Stan Getz fans to dig out your copy of "Captain Marvel" and take a few minutes off from the rat race of life for some quality time with some of the best Jazz music ever recorded.
Stan Getz is accompanied by Chick Corea on electric piano, Stanley Clarke on Electric bass, Tony Williams on drums and Airto Moreira on percussion.
