Thanks Marla.
So sorry about Gerry. Such a wonderful man and musician.
Give my bests to his family. I always loved his playing.
Wow, should be a blast to hear Don Menza. Another monster player.
I have an LP made in Toronto in 1977 under Pete Magadini's leadership.
"Bones Blues". Don Menza, Wray Downes and Dave Young. Wonderful.
I also saw Don in Montreal in the early 80's. He played at the Musicians's Union
club. Sam Noto was on trumpet.
Thank you! I needed that :o) I'm just thinking about you and wanted to send you my sympathy about the loss of your friend Gerry. I wish you a safe journey and may the music heal your heart. Here's hoping we all meet again on the grandest journey and oh man, there will be the coolest music forever!
Marla, I have that one. A beautiful album. Hip Pocket Recorded live at Carmelo's.
Don Menza with Sal Nistico, Sam Noto, Frank Strazzeri, Andrew Simpkins, Shelly Manne.
in october 2 and 3 1981. on the Palo Alto label. Producer Herb Wong.
Sledded down the I.G. Hospital hill many times. saw Morris Nanton. I went to Chancelor Ave Grammer school. But went to Art's High in Newark. I had to pay because I lived in Irv. but it was worth it.
Marla
yeah, his first album as a leader I think was with Nat Adderley, Barry Harris it was called Heavyweights. I think
it was produced by Cannonball. Of course that band at Buddy's Place. You're lucky to have heard him live over there.
They made an LP and I remember the pics, they were all dressed up in white suits.
Wayne graduated before me but we played together a few times. I think he was on leave from the army when we worked together, in the early 60s. I was at Arts with Connie Frances and Pat Senatore who later Played bass with the Tijuana Brass.
I was at Arts from 54-58. I spent every Summer in Atlantic City, playing drums with a band that cut shows. After work I would go to the Harlem Club where I made friends with the late drummer Chris Columbus. He was Sonny Paine's father.
Marla, I was trying to locate my Heavyweights LP but could not find it.
I am just quoting from memory. It was recorded on Jazzland/Riverside with Nat Adderley, Barry Harris, Sam Jones and Walter Perkins.
From my failing memory they played "Just Friends", "Mamblue" and a wonderful version of "My Old Flame" by Sal.
They played other tunes, but I don't remember the titles;)) I think the liner notes were written by Ira Gitler.
I will have to find out if it's been re-issued on CD. I think there were more than one session under that title. I only had the first session. Vinnie Ruggiero was on the second session.
I must have loaned my copy somewhere;))
Very well thank you.
I hope the trip to L.A. brought some comfort and support;
Always hard to pick up the pieces after such a loss.
Nice to see you back.
Yeah I think it's definately worth a trip to L.A.;))
He plays every week there at that same club ? A steady gig.
That must have been beautiful.
I think I told you that I saw him live once
in Montreal. He had Sam Noto and a local rhythm section.
Awesome.
So how about you ?
Always nice to hear from you.
