Birthdays: Stan and Sonny

We are almost there. (-:
So we have ample time to give them our wishes and reminisce.

February 2 1927.
Happy Birthday Stan.
Thank you for all the beautiful legacy that you left us.
All your music is a constant source of joy.
Truly a master.

I am also reminded that this is also Sonny Stitt's birthday. February 2 1924
There must be something special about that date (-:
Sonny was very close to Stan during his JATP days. They made it a ritual
to get together on that date and wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY… Continue

Music From Stan Getz

As a complement to the rare Stan Getz thread I would like
to upload a few representative tracks.

The first one is from "Stan Getz with the Lighthouse All Stars"

A tune that Stan most likely played quite often around that time.
There is also a recording of it made in Birdland in August 1952.
Billie Holiday loved to sing this tune too.
I am sure Stan was a great romantic;)

The stunningly beautiful song
I Only Have Eyes For You (Warren/Dubin) .

So only a bit more than nine months after the Bird… Continue

When I play this video it is completely out of sinc. Maybe my computer. I also get the feeling that Stan is not too pleased with Chet, like he may fall asleep or off his stool at any given moment. Stan looks great, Chet like the ravages of time etc. have left their mark. Thanks for posting Denis, I only have the CDs.

The following video has been posted so many times.
But what is different is the much better audio quality which now does justice
to the wonderful music played by the bests Stan and Chet.

How about some "Just Friends" ?

You are probably right about Lou Levy on that track. I believe the quartet included Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Shelley Manne on drums, all good old West Coasters and not a single one with us any more. P.S. I have not heard the track, "Of Thee I Sing."

thanks Denis and your imput is valuable. I want this tenor album to be special and "soulful" for sure. Speaking of Zoot i have this great gig we did together and i will try to put it on the site. Zoot, Myself , Teddy Wilson, Milt Hinton and Gus Johnson. Just couldn't find any good players :) I was in Toronto with Wilbur but years ago i played a beautiful theater in Montreal with full orchestra with a french bandleader who had a big hit at the time and the name escapes me now ? Love Montreal especially those days in the 70s. Glenn

thanks Denis and i appreciate that. I am known as a trumpet player first as you may know and then alto. Tenor is a love that i haven't had the time to pursue in my busy career and now i am attempting to complete that. All the tracks that i post on Tenor are "scratch tracks" i did in my home in preperation for this album. Your feedback is welcomed. In my career i have played extensively with so many greats like Benny Goodman, Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims etc. Unfortunately i never had the upportunity to play with Stan but my goal is to incorporate all these influences into this tenor album in my own way and definetly "from the heart" as you say is the "springboard". By the way where are you in Canada ? I had some very good times up there with Bob Wilber in the 80s. best,Glenn
