Remembering Stan...

Hip 21yr old at Farnborough Air Show. The smokes have long gone, as has the hair and slim build. But I had already been listening to Stan for a few years, building my jazz collection and have hundreds of cherished vinyls, cds and tapes. Lovely memories of the local jazz scene which had virtually died out by then.

Hi Terry

No I wasn't aware about Ms Assa!..Now you've burst my bubble big time, since I was beginning to feel special for a nanosecond, now it could take months or even years to recover from the shock/horror of knowing that she wrote to you all!

I like the Farnborough Air Show pic, probably in the days of Avro Vulcans, English Electric Lightnings and Comet 4C airliners in Dan Air livery...In the days when jazz didn't sound like a "Pet shop on fire!" to quote the late Ronnie Scott...The radio station that I presented on is called RTRfm here in Perth and does indeed stream on the net..You'll find 2 jazz shows, Saturday Jazz on a Saturday and Giant Steps on a Sunday..I've pulled the pin at the moment as I've taken up study at Uni and just don't have enough hours in the day, but drop by and listen, although you'll probably be creasing the sheets UK time...It's good to know that you're a SG fan, me too, along with other great tenor men like Zoot Sims, Joe Henderson, Lucky Thompson, Tubby Hayes, Dick Morrissey (We have to support us Brits too, along with Typhoo tea:)  I'm a huge Bill Evans fan too!

Ronnie Scott was a great one for quotes.  I was at the club back in March to hear a singer I admire - Sarah Moule.  I first came across her about 3 years ago when she appeared at the small theatre I work at as a volunteer.  I was setting up the bar and heard this fabulous voice doing a sound check and loosening up.  Her show was a Peggy Lee/Fran Landesman tribute.  I was not really aware of Fran's work apart from "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most", the latter a lovely tune recorded by Stan with Lalo Schifrin on the "Reflections" album he made in '63, produced by Creed Taylor.     Fran collaborated with Simon Wallace (pianist husband of Sarah) and together they wrote many terrific songs. A 14.14min clip on YouTube - "Sarah Moule Live HD 720" - showcases Sarah and Fran's work.  Unfortunately it's spoilt by jumpy editing and some unnecessary focusing on her breasts.

Sarah had a fill in spot at Ronnie's Bar, a small upstairs club which is a cheap drop-in with no booking necessary.  I spent an enjoyable evening sharing thoughts with a friend of hers - another singer Shireen Francis - who I'd hoped to catch at Ronnie's in mid-July but had to miss because of a heating engineer visit.  Living 47 miles from Frith Street it's a £22.30 train journey in to London, so it makes sense to do a tourist trip and have a full day in town as I have to leave the club well before closing to catch the last train.

Good to see we have similar tastes.  I have several Zoot Sims, an early Jazz Couriers with Tubby and Ronnie, Morrissey's "Storm Warning" from '65 and a couple of others and in particular a Bill Evans collection.  I've got the Riverside set on cd with a few others through to the troubled "But Beautiful" with Stan in '74.  Also thanks to YouTube and the free DVDVideoSoft programme I've got several live tv and other album recordings

I will check out the radio station as I have many nights when I'm doing something on my computer.

Later.
