Just wanted to stop by and thank you Denis.. for taking the time to watch all the People Time videos... and for all the heart warming comments!
You're so giving and I do so appreciate it! xoxo
Denis, hi, hope ur having a nice weekend. Tell me, please, who is the pianist and also the bassist on Time After Time from the Edmonton Concert? Thanks and best regards, Paul
Not working for me either Denis... )-; I don't know what's wrong except perhaps the mp3 itself has a problem.... or at least ning thinks it does! SORRY! )-;
Hi Denis,
apologies again for a slow reply, the audio and video i have is from 18th february 1983 recorded at the " Sodra Teatern" Stockholm. the audio is a 3cd set issued by Verve in 1998, the video is from a tv showof the 3rd CD that was previously unissued, hope this clarifies what i have.
Any other of my recordings that you might like ?
Sippin' at Bell's.
Roger
Denis, always good to read your thoughts. Yes, stunning, I agree and so did the crowd of fans cheering the artists assembled that night at Carnegie Hall. A big band backing up a great soloist is hard to beat. Imagine being backed up by the likes of Pete and Conte Condoli, Phil Wilson, Jim Pugh, Frank Tiberi, Flip Phillips, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Giuffre, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Rowles, Ralph Burns, Pat Coil, Chubby Jackson, Don Lamond, Jake Hanna and many more.
When I was a kid living in New York I tried to see as many big bands as I could afford on my allowance: the Dorseys, Miller, Woody, Artie Shaw, Basie, Krupa, Charlie Barnett etc. I love the sound of big band brasses and a wild drummer driving them. Ah yes, those were the days: 25 cents to sit in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium, a dime for a double feature and a nickel for a burger at the White Tower. If Stan were here he would know what I'm talking about. Nevertheless, Denis, the future lies ahead! So, keep on blowing that horn and enjoy every beautiful sound that comes out of it. Au revoir.
Denis, I can well imagine the thrill of experiencing the Ellington Orchestra at that age, and Johnny Hodges to boot. You'll have that memory forever. But I have to give you a small history lesson. When I saw these bands in New York I was between the ages of eleven and thirteen. No kid that age would be allowed into a jazz club. In the late thirties and early forties all the bands and vocalists (Sinatra etc.) appeared at the big movie theaters. (Stage bands). I think it was the Paramount, the Orpheum etc. where you bought a ticket to see a movie and a stage show. And that's how a kid my age was able to see these famous bands: no smoking, no liquor, just entertainment. Later in life when I lived on the West Coast I went to the various clubs. As a freshman at UC Berkeley my friend took me to the Black Hawk in San Francisco. He happened to know Brubeck personally. Dave not only sat with us between every set but smoked my Camels because he could barely afford to buy them for himself at that time. Later and after graduation I met Shelley Manne, Stan Kenton, Bobby Short and his bass player, and a host of other lesser known musicians. Sort of like a jazz "groupie." And so it goes. I'm still hooked. If only my dad would have bought me the tenor sax I wanted and the lessons to go with it.
If you would like me to make a copy of the WH CD I can and mail it. Let me know.
All the best, Paul
Denis, you are probably younger but numbers are really irrelevant. I don't think the Black Hawk, which was just a hole in the wall, became Keystone Corner, but I'm not sure. Yes, Shelley Manne recorded at the Black Hawk. His club the Manne-Hole in Hollywood hosted, among others, Bill Evans. Most of these venues are history now, sad to say.
Before I make a copy of the WH CD you must tell me the format you want, i.e. MP3 or Audio quality and where to send it. No need to return the favor. I don't have time to listen to all the music that is in my library now.
Best regards, Paul
You can always depend on LA POSTE. So glad you like the concert. It is one of my favorites. And Woody's remarks are a blast as well.
I will keep your offer in mind, thank you very much. Best regards, Paul
Hi Denis!!!
I'm fine, just finished the tour and are now trying to "finish" a cold :-)
How wonderful to hear from you. I haven't been online that much the past weeks, just on and off for a few minutes.
But now I'm BACK.
How are you?
Hope life is smiling to you and with you!!
Love and hugs
Hilde
Hi again Denis.
Yes, the tour was wonderful, had a great time. It was only in Norway.
The cold is gone and I'm "fit for fight" again :)
So you're not feeling good. Get well soon Denis and don't work too much.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Love and weekend-hug

Thank you for your welcome message...I appreciate it. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Glad to be here. It brings back so many wonderful memories of Stan.

Hello, Denis. I'm a sax player in Oxford, UK (which by the way has a thriving jazz culture). I e-mailed Bev, and she suggested that you'd be the best person to answer a query of mine.
I've been learning a tune called "Sweetie Pie" off track 1 on CD 1 of a two-CD set called "Stan Getz -- Dejavu Retro Gold Collection". The cover and booklet ascribe this tune to Getz as the composer (along with another, called "Ah-Moore" -- did he once have a lady friend called Moore?).
I've been trying to find the chord changes so I can play this at our weekly jam session. I think I can pick up the major chord changes by ear, but there are probably chords in there which I can't hear and which a kbd or bass player would ideally like to know. So I'd like to find a chord chart if possible.
I followed a link from www.stangetz.net/music.htm and checked on www.sheetmusicplus.com, which made everything much more confusing. They've apparently got two tunes of this title in big band arrangements, one by Roger Neumann (with "unusual changes", which doesn't sound like the tune I'm hearing on the CD), and one by and arranged by Don Sebesky.
Do you know anything about this tune? Did Stan actually compose it? And is there a chord chart for it available anywhere? (It's played on the CD in C, and starts with the notes G, G, D, suggesting the words "Sweetie pie".)
Hi Denis!!
I'm so happy that you liked the videos.
I'm fine - feels like summer here at the moment, and that makes me smile :)
How are you?
Love and hugs from me to you

Ohh yes - warm weather helps.
Makes us want to smile - right hehe.
If you want me to I can send you the files in mp3 on high solution, but it depends on how many mb you're able to receive through your e-mail. :)

Hi again Denis.
One is 20,1 MB and the other one is 25,1 MB
Too big???
I can try if you want to - just send me a message with your e-mail address, I'm working from a new machine and don't have all my "old" addresses here.
Ok?

Thanks for the video of "Jaws" and "Griff." I love them and yes, I sure have the recording you speak of. I did get to hear them live a couple of times at the Blue Note in NYC and it was always exciting. I believe the rhythm section with Griff's regular rhythm section, Michael Weiss, the late Dennis Irwin and Kenny Washington.
Hi Denis, sorry for the delay, i am doing well, have nearly regained all of the weight i lost in the hospital, and i am much stronger and healthier.
Did anyone send you a copy of the Stan getz Quartet Tv show that was shown here a month or two ago?

Roger
Just "making the rounds" and checking in. Hoping all is well with you.
Are you attending any of the jazz fests up your way this year? I've always wanted to go to the Montreal Jazz Fest, but don't feel bad that I can't go now...would have loved to be there in the 70's or even early/mid 8O's.
Wow, Denis...thanks! I am a long-time fan of Stevie's.
The only sadness is that so many of the great jazz musicians I heard live at jazz festivals back in the 70's/80's are gone now and there are so few jazz players with the ability to fill seats. That being said, how wonderful to have Stevie Wonder!!!
Thank for the add way cool.....and my music collection is about 295 BG of Jazz and finding out what, who,and where some times is very hard.I do have some connections at the labels which does help and the internet is not alway very reliable so research and music history has been my thing for years oh and about 2,800 more alblums still to convert to hard drive and that takes awhile first convert to flac for quaility then to MP3 for sites like this I only hope I have time vs. desire
thanks Denis and i appreciate that. I am known as a trumpet player first as you may know and then alto. Tenor is a love that i haven't had the time to pursue in my busy career and now i am attempting to complete that. All the tracks that i post on Tenor are "scratch tracks" i did in my home in preperation for this album. Your feedback is welcomed. In my career i have played extensively with so many greats like Benny Goodman, Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims etc. Unfortunately i never had the upportunity to play with Stan but my goal is to incorporate all these influences into this tenor album in my own way and definetly "from the heart" as you say is the "springboard". By the way where are you in Canada ? I had some very good times up there with Bob Wilber in the 80s. best,Glenn
thanks Denis and your imput is valuable. I want this tenor album to be special and "soulful" for sure. Speaking of Zoot i have this great gig we did together and i will try to put it on the site. Zoot, Myself , Teddy Wilson, Milt Hinton and Gus Johnson. Just couldn't find any good players :) I was in Toronto with Wilbur but years ago i played a beautiful theater in Montreal with full orchestra with a french bandleader who had a big hit at the time and the name escapes me now ? Love Montreal especially those days in the 70s. Glenn
You are probably right about Lou Levy on that track. I believe the quartet included Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Shelley Manne on drums, all good old West Coasters and not a single one with us any more. P.S. I have not heard the track, "Of Thee I Sing."
Even though Stan is not on this one I thought you just may enjoy this little gem..been on out of print a long while....quite the gem....

The following video has been posted so many times.
But what is different is the much better audio quality which now does justice
to the wonderful music played by the bests Stan and Chet.
When I play this video it is completely out of sinc. Maybe my computer. I also get the feeling that Stan is not too pleased with Chet, like he may fall asleep or off his stool at any given moment. Stan looks great, Chet like the ravages of time etc. have left their mark. Thanks for posting Denis, I only have the CDs.
The Parisian radio TSF Jazz broadcast a program on the jazz festival of Cannes 1958.
We hear Martial Solal with Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke. The guests soloists are Sacha Distel, Barney Wilen, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie.
The guests play together only for the final jam session on Blues Walk.
Maybe you can listen to the podcast (for a limited time I think) on the website of the radio.
