Marla, I have that one. A beautiful album. Hip Pocket Recorded live at Carmelo's.
Don Menza with Sal Nistico, Sam Noto, Frank Strazzeri, Andrew Simpkins, Shelly Manne.
in october 2 and 3 1981. on the Palo Alto label. Producer Herb Wong.
Sledded down the I.G. Hospital hill many times. saw Morris Nanton. I went to Chancelor Ave Grammer school. But went to Art's High in Newark. I had to pay because I lived in Irv. but it was worth it.
Marla
yeah, his first album as a leader I think was with Nat Adderley, Barry Harris it was called Heavyweights. I think
it was produced by Cannonball. Of course that band at Buddy's Place. You're lucky to have heard him live over there.
They made an LP and I remember the pics, they were all dressed up in white suits.
Wayne graduated before me but we played together a few times. I think he was on leave from the army when we worked together, in the early 60s. I was at Arts with Connie Frances and Pat Senatore who later Played bass with the Tijuana Brass.
I was at Arts from 54-58. I spent every Summer in Atlantic City, playing drums with a band that cut shows. After work I would go to the Harlem Club where I made friends with the late drummer Chris Columbus. He was Sonny Paine's father.
Marla, I was trying to locate my Heavyweights LP but could not find it.
I am just quoting from memory. It was recorded on Jazzland/Riverside with Nat Adderley, Barry Harris, Sam Jones and Walter Perkins.
From my failing memory they played "Just Friends", "Mamblue" and a wonderful version of "My Old Flame" by Sal.
They played other tunes, but I don't remember the titles;)) I think the liner notes were written by Ira Gitler.
I will have to find out if it's been re-issued on CD. I think there were more than one session under that title. I only had the first session. Vinnie Ruggiero was on the second session.
I must have loaned my copy somewhere;))
Very well thank you.
I hope the trip to L.A. brought some comfort and support;
Always hard to pick up the pieces after such a loss.
Nice to see you back.
Yeah I think it's definately worth a trip to L.A.;))
He plays every week there at that same club ? A steady gig.
That must have been beautiful.
I think I told you that I saw him live once
in Montreal. He had Sam Noto and a local rhythm section.
Awesome.
Hi Marla:) I really love the article you posted. These aricles and videos speak so much of Stan the person, and it is wonderful. Have a blessed weekend:)
I saw Jackie live here in Montreal at the Jazz Fest. Very exciting. He was on so many Blue Note records. I lost count;))
But I remember two LP's in the 70's. He made a few trips to Copenhagen. There was one LP "The Meeting" with Dexter Gordon. Also an other one "Live at the Montmartre". Kenny Drew, NHOP and Alex Riel.
I love these two recordings;
Yeah I remember "Swing, Swang, Swingin". Beautiful.
Also "Tippin the Scales" with Sonny Clark. The title escapes
me for now but he recorded with Kenny Dorham. Just so nice.
Like I said luckily he left lots of music for us to enjoy.
Hey Marla..lol Yea I am still trying to master those "Food for Thought" applications, but fall so short of the mark and end up eatin it so many times lol BUT life is good and ya keep on keepin on. I hope you have a very blessed week(-:O
Yo Mar, things are back to groovy here. Blow hard Ike knocked the power out for a couple of days, lots of trees down too, but we're getting back to paranormalcy. I've been wanting to talk to you rather than email, and bummed that I missed you. I'll try to catch you tomorrow or the next day. My other laptop is in a coma and I've been in limbo ever since! I'll be hearing the sweet Mar voice soon, I hope. Love & hugs from Nutville.
Nice to hear from you.
Here it's our long Thanksgiving weekend, so just taking it real easy;))
Lucky you. Is it a club date or concert ? That should be a nice one.
Yes Gerry and Chuck, that goes a long way back. Brings back memories.
That reminds me of a Double LP on Milestone Records called "Jazz Brother" Chuck Mangione with Gap Mangione, Winton Kelly and Sal Nistico. Loved that one. Joe Romano was also on some tracks.
Recorded in March 61 and July 62. Re-issued in 77.
Of course Sal was absolutely marvellous.
I am sure you will have a great week;))
You take care.
Hi Marla, Love the photo with your Bishon Frise's. Eva and I loved grooming that breed back in the day when we were dog groomers. We never ever came across a nasty Bison in all our years of grooming dogs.lol We stopped by to share some of Joans music with you. She has been singing up a storm on myspace karaoke and has such a incredible voice. Her fans are growing day by day. She's such an delightful person, and we are glad to have her as a friend. Here are two of her songs that I put to a video. "Somewhere out There" Joan sung with Daniel who dubbed in his voice from a different state to make an awesome duet. The Song "Ben" I put into a video with pictures of our Paulie, a baby squirrel Eva and I adopted and raised, till he was old enough to go off on his own. )o: We miss that little guy. BTW the video of Stan, Dizzy, and Chick playing Grooving High was a treat. It was the first time we saw that one. We hope you enjoy the 2 videos. Hugs from LI Lou and Eva
I'm missing the Mar. You might be busy with a day gig, but I hope you're having fun instead. Just thinking about you and your laugh, and will hear your voice again someday soon! Keep the toes warm and the jazz flowing. Love, hugs, paw waves, Mar # 2
It's 40 above here, but I've got my big sweater on. Oh no, did that sound like I'm getting hot and heavy with a big sweater? I swear I'm not. It's all perfectly kosher, umm... too late, my goose is cooked. Michael is neither big or sweaty, discuss. We could be laughing on the phone right now. If you get this and will be up for a while, let me know and I'll give you a ringy dingy.

We are hoping , and praying for brighter days ahead. If George W can make it till the years end with out any more of his blunders. We might just all be ok.lol Its sad to know there are Americans living throughout the States in tents because they lost their jobs and homes. We wish you both a joyful and peaceful holiday season ahead. We have been trapped here on Long Island. The gas and tolls to get off the island are getting outrageous.haha Like we told Marissa, Sometimes we feel like were on Gilligan's Island.lol We were lucky enough to catch a jazz trio today at a local library . The guitar player told us he played with Stan Getz once a long time ago. Had a nice talk after the concert. Let us know if your ever planning a trip to LI. It would be nice to connect. We deleted our last comment to you because we weren't sure if the karaoke link was traceable to this site. It was funny to listen to, but we didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. We sent that to Marisa through email. It was sooo off key and out of tune, and it made us laugh just listening to it. Wishing you a peaceful a joyous Thanksgiving and hugs to the boys, Louie and Eubie. (o: Lou and Eva
Ahh Yes, Sonny's Place, One of the cool spots on this long, Long Island for jazz. It not around anymore. )o: It closed down in the mid 90's. We miss the outdoor jazz concerts that they used to have every summer on the island that the IAJ used to promote. We both were lucky enough to catch Buddy Rich's band, Maynard Ferguson's band, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton and so many more. Once when I was in the city I met the Brecker Brothers in between my own gig with King Fish. Micheal and Randy's band back then was called Dreams. Increadible horn players those two. We never got to hear Stan the Man in a concert. Did you ever hear him in concert? Anyway we had our first snow fall today, and are as ready as well ever be for winter. We wish you a pre almost Happy Holiday too.lol hahaha Lou and Eva
link to a piece of music dedicated to Sonnys Place below:
Hi Marla, We are both doing fine here. So far this winter has been a piece of cake as far as the snow fall. Our little Annie got a nice warm sweater to keep her warm outdoors. Unfortunately today was a extremely sad day for us cause we learned that our neighbor has lung cancer. She lives across the street from us. We took her to her doctors appointment, and he gave the bad news. Her and her husband are 2 sweet seniors that have been through some pretty rough times and it seems that its about to get rougher in the near future for them both. They don't drive and have no way of getting around the island. They may be forced to move back to the city in March is there is affordable housing available for them.... So we heard a little about Facebook from Joan but was curious about it. Between MySpace , the Jazz Network , Stan Getz Community and we mustn't forget Freecycle we are spreading ourselves thin.lol So please full us in about Facebook. . Is it anything like MySpace? Do you get to set up a web page and can you post music videos and photos on it? If you haven't been by our Myspace yet stop by. Our web address is: http://www.myspace.com/louandeva .....Theres A Bunch of Puppies all over the Place!hahaha Puppies and Jazz , what more can you ask for out of life? ...Well Good Health and plenty of money.lol And we wish you that for the year ahead. Stay warm and cozy. Love Eva and Lou
Marla thank you.
So nice to hear from you.
How about you ? all is well ?
I had been feeling a bit down and tired lately but right now feeling much better. With spring just around the corner (-: Wow Spring Is Here.

How are you ? Hope all is well and you're enjoying a nice holiday weekend.
Just droppin by to say hi and sharing something you sure know about
It's just incredible that we have some videos of that duo.
I remember the LP "Live At Minton's Playhouse" with Junior Mance, Larry Gales
and Ben Riley. That was one cookin record. They had such a beautiful theme.
Yeah I hear you about the Montreal Jazz fest. Lately it has not been really up to my taste.
But this year I think they have quite a few good acts.
Last night we had Jazz At Lincoln Center with Winton Marsalis.
Also Maria Schneider Orchestra.
Tomorrow Dave Holland with Chris Potter.
Sadao Watanabe will be here too. Will try to catch that one.
Wayne Shorter is also scheduled this week.
Lee Konitz. And of course Jimmy Cobb's band with Buster Williams.
Lew Tabackin will be in with George Wein and the Newport All Stars.
And not to be missed Helen Merrill at Upstairs Jazz club.
Marla I hope if you ever come up this way you will let me know.
That would be awesome. We're not too far away you know.
