Good morning Bev. It's 8 am here in Fort Collins and what a week of weather we're having, 70 for the last 3 days. Today we'll have one more then snow all weekend!
Mom's seeded Italian is still waiting for your visit, good thing she makes it each week so there's good rotation!

Hi Bev, Yes, I know Hilde. I was also a friend of Randi Hultin, and often met Stan and Monica at her place. I used to work in a place called Club 7, once a famous jazzclub in Oslo. As far as a remember I made two tours for Stan in Norway, maybe three. Those were the days.....
You have made a very nice site here.
    All the best,
    Bjørg

So dear dear Bev. Happy Birthday to your father (it's past midnight here now) and if he were alive I would have thanked him for giving life to a beautiful soul and Søs like you.
And I would thank him for his wonderful music .
    Love you always twinsoulsøs.

Dear Bev, thank you for the welcome message. And thanks for creating this beautiful network site (& stangetz.net). My favorite Getz recordings are from quartet sessions in the 1980s, but I just wanted to add some music that many might not have come across. The first title "Summertime" is from a 1987 Baryy Manilow album, entitled "Swing Street". Summertime is the only track Stan is in. The other piece "The Gift" is usually recorded under its original title "Recado Bossa Nova". I came across this version when I was trying to find various versions of the tune. I don't know who the singer is. After two minutes into the song, the saxophone picks up; and it has to be Stan Getz. But to this day, I have never been able to locate this recording in any Stan Getz discography available online or in books. (I thought maybe you could help.:)) And, I almost forgot. Happy Birthday to your father.

    Best regards,
    firat

Bev, you shouldn't be hard on yourself. :) These are very obscure contributions for Getz fans. You probably haven't heard of your father on "When I fall in love" by Julio Iglesias either. I'll upload it if I can edit out the Iglesias part. LOL LOL LOL

Yes, it says "Firat. Keep Blowing". Here is the entire story. (Feel free to stop if you get bored). Sarah Vauhgn was scheduled to appear on Istanbul (Jazz) Festival on July 11 & 12, 1989. She couldn't make it due to health problems. Somehow, the festival organizers managed to book Austrid Gilberto for the 11th and Stan Getz for the 12th. (Very bizarre, I doubt they (Stan & Austrid) knew about this.) At that time, I was only 17, had been listening to Stan Getz for more than a year and playing the tenor sax for approximately 6 months. (After hearing him for the first time on Manha de Carnaval, he had become my idol.) I had already purchased tickets for the second night of the Sarah Vaughn concert, so didn't have to go into any trouble getting tickets. Anyway, on my way to the concert (a few hours before the concert), I was walking through a park next to the Sheraton Hotel (now Intercontinental), I heard some music that sounded like a french horn. I looked around, there was no musician around. Then, I looked up, there he was: Stan Getz. In fact, all I saw was some guy half naked with a saxophone. But I could recognize the tone from miles away. He was playing scales or something probably to warm up before the concert in the balcony of a room on one of the top floors of Sheraton (16th as I later figured out). (In fact, that side of Sheraton has a beautiful view of the Bosporus and the Topkapi Palace. ) Anyway, I met with my parents (as they were coming to the concert as well), we went into Sheraton to grab something to eat. I sneaked up to the 16th floor (third floor from the top as I had counted), and waited almost an hour in the elevator lounge for Mr. Getz to appear. Thank God there was an executive floor reception desk on that floor which prevented me from going around listening to doors and disturbing Stan Getz before the concert. Then after about an hour, he came out of his room, I gathered all my courage and asked him if he was "Mr. Getz" and if he could sign a few reeds for me. Luckily I didn't have any pen with me, so we went down to a corner suit on the sixth floor, probably his tour manager's room. I think he would have his dinner there. He signed three reeds for me (two vandorens and one hemke). On one of them he wrote "Keep blowing", I think (either he said so or I assumed) he was referring to playing long tones (not keeping on playing in general). And the concert was so beautiful. That probably was the highlight of my life. I was enrolled at a college in Iowa in 1990-1991. If I had known he would leave us so soon, I would definitely have found a way to see him again. I still think of what I could have asked him if I had another chance to meet him, as if it is ever possible.

    Dear Bev.
I want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Stan.
I am so thankful for what he gave the world.

Thinking of you today and hoping Stan is laughing on his big day!

    I Love you!!!

    XOXOXOXOXOXO

And P.S. The most precious story below by Firat... with 'some guy half naked with a saxaphone" LOL! Reminds me of that picture of him in his shorts playing to Jack... or was it Katie??? Anyway, ;-))))
  • Joannah

Yeah, I left him a really sweet comment about not being related to the Getz's by blood, but as you are my best friend in the whole world, I certainly feel like family to you. Sorry you never saw it, cuz it's gone o.O But there it is again ;-)
    LOVE YOU!
    XOXOXOXO
  • Joannah

    Calling you......
    ;-)
  • Firat Ersin

Thank you, Bev. I feel very happy to be a member of this community. You're right, perhaps I should post the story, but every time I think of that night, I can't stop thinking why I didn't have a camera with me or why I didn't ask him smarter questions, ...
    Thanks again,
    firat
  • Firat Ersin

Hi Bev, I figured you wouldn't have this one either. I bought the Getz/Haanstra CD when I was in Amsterdam in 1995. I don't know how to categorize it but it is just beautiful music. I don't think there are any Getz recordings with strings with such sound quality. I believe its no longer in print, like many other CBS recordings.
  • Eric Pawlett

Thanks Bev, this is a pretty terrific site you have here...most worthy of the great Stan Getz.

  • Eric Pawlett

Thank so much Bev . I`ll update the photos from time to time.
Would you know which album of your father`s had the trak "Don`t Cry For Me Argentina?" I can`t seem to find it anywhere.

I'm fighting against pirated Cd's and DVD's and I think, Sten Getz
"Live in Belgrad 1974" is one of these illegal DVD's.

    Hi Bev,
Suza is saying hello to Stella before she settles down with her book. She is getting old (14) but still demands her 3 walks a day though she is a bit of a plodder now and doesn't give cats too much of a scare these days.
Have got the 3 CDs of the recordings your father made with Jimmy Raney. All wonderful tracks but for me, the two he made of "These foolish things" are out of this world.
    Love to you and yours,
    Roy xx

Thank you for the welcome, Bev.
I am a VERY 'late bloomer' having only taken-up learning when I retired.....I hope I get to 'bloom' a bit more before the frost gets me!
My teacher is 70+, primarily a tenor-player, and a great admirer of Stan's playing.
    Best regards

Sorry Bev...old age must certainly be catching up. Momentarily I thought I hadn't got you there on the SG Community. Just to confuse you even more I recently swopped my MS pic for one of a much younger me setting off for a twenties garden party. Those were the days I am told but I suppose their depression was much worse than the one we have now??
Never mind we gotta keep smiling !!
    Much love,

  • Harri Rautiainen

Thanks for hugs and welcoming message.

You gave me an idea. Norwegians have this peculiar letter Æ (minuscule: æ). Hopefully it will show on your screen? Using that one combine both words that are so dear to you. "King of SÆX", I go both ways :-)

    Lotsa hugs,
    Hærri

Happy "we're not April Fools" day to you! ;0) I gotta "drive" here more often, especially first thing in the a.m., as the music is so heavenly.

Actually, I hang my head in jazz shame - I don't have the Getz/Brookmeyer recording and I'm going to search it out on either CD or itunes right now. Thanks!
