Well, I guess that pretty well answers the question, at least in Colorado. If jazz can survive anywhere it will in Europe. There are concerts, clubs, regular airtime programs with presenters dedicated to just jazz and quite a lot of fans. The commercial aspect of music hasn't progressed to the point where the top ten get all the attention. Otherwise we'll be reduced to listening to jazz recordings from the past on out iPods.
It made me think about what's happening with radio stations. Here in Colorado we had a pop / smooth jazz station, KHIGH, for years along with a listener supported commercial free station, KUVO. 10 years of the commercial station and then they went of of business. This was about 2 years ago. They tried to stream the internet but that ended too. What I don't understand is that most people I talk to, not kids, loved the station and religously listened. Thank God for KUVO otherwise there'd be no jazz station in CO!
The same happened when I went back to my NY for a wedding last year. 101.9 is now crap rap after being a jazz station for more years than I can remember, same with SF as far as I can tell. What's going on? Anyone?
