I have several cassette tapes of live recordings from Lawrence Kansas, at both a local jazz club and from the university or public radio station. I'm not sure what to do with them. They are well-mastered and very clean recordings. Any suggestions?

In 1962, at 13, my jazz loving grandmother introduced me to Stan Getz. When I say 'introduced' I don't mean in-person, but it seemed like it to me.

I was asked to sit in the sweet spot while my grandmother played the album, 'Big Band Bossa Nova'. These 40-something minutes were to change me and my life, both for the good.

I sank into the music, it was like a giant pillow for something in my soul, my, as yet unencumbered soul. I had only a moderate exposure to my grandmothers music at this time, but I found myself spending many more hours with this precious lady and her stereo . She was very eclectic in her musical taste, primarily jazz and classical, with a multitude of other genres in between.

I started to collect every album that I could find with Stan playing on it. I was lucky because my aunt worked at A&A Records on Yonge St. in Toronto.

A few doors down the street was Sam the Record Man that had a dedicated Jazz department headed by the wonderful John Norris. John taught me so much and helped to open my young mind to all sorts of music. Between he and my grandmother, I developed a rather mature music collection for someone as young as myself then.

I cannot recall a week in my life that I have not spent an hour or two with Stan Getz in my room. We've become very good acquaintances over the years. He playing so masterfully and with so much revealing emotion. Me, sitting respectfully, taking in the gift that he is playing.

I believe that I have about 150 albums with Stan on them. It is a while since I counted. I am always amazed at the breadth of style and the depths of what is emanating from his horn. He has a quality that haunts you in a wonderfully positive way.

I am honoured to be able to say these few thoughts and recollections to you Bev and everyone here, I appreciate the opportunity.

In my nearly 50 years of listening to your Dad, I am still blown away by him!

My only regret, if I may be permitted, is that I never had a chance to thank him personally for these 50 years.

A sheynem dank, Mr. Getz, shalom!

Kind regards,

Jacomb

I recently came up with an old piece of 8mm movie film that was in my Dads possessions when he died in the Fiji Islands in 1972.

The film was only 2 minutes and 38 seconds long but contained the only known video of my Dad and his 25' trimaran yacht "Tri-Tiki".

As nearly as I can tell the video was shot in New Zealand probably shortly after he bought the yacht there in 1971.

Being of the old silent 8mm film generation I decided to set the video to music.

After listening to many of my favorite jazz albums trying to find just the right piece of music I decided on the track "Captain Marvel" from the album of the same name.

I made my decision based on the fact that I had always thought of my father when listening to
the electric piano work of Chick Korea on this album. My father was a working Jazz pianist and although I had never heard him play (he left the states when I was two years old and never returned) for some reason I imagined that this would be his sound.

It wasnt until after completing the editing and transfering the video to DVD format that I discovered while reading the liner notes from the Captain Marvel cd that this album was recorded in 1972, the same year that my father died and very near the same time the old 8mm film was shot. I knew then that I had made the right selection!

Sorry for the rambling this story has probably turned into.
I just want to encourage all you Stan Getz fans to dig out your copy of "Captain Marvel" and take a few minutes off from the rat race of life for some quality time with some of the best Jazz music ever recorded.
Stan Getz is accompanied by Chick Corea on electric piano, Stanley Clarke on Electric bass, Tony Williams on drums and Airto Moreira on percussion. "It's a solid gas (if you can imagine such a state) to bump into this album again! I owned it on vinyl when it came out around 1960, and lost it to a jazz drummer on Mountain Drive in Santa Barbara. He also copped my girl friend, but that's another story. I almost played the grooves off that platter while I had it, and can pretty much remember the whole thing still. Very glad to find it again, and to recommend it to you."

"This is my all time favorite Anita O'day Album. Anita O'day is five steps beyond amazing. Her vocal style can't be beat. Every song she sings gets the special O'day treatment and is forever more her own. The track listing of this album is just chocked full of winners! My favorite is Anita's rendition of 'Stars Fell On Alabama'. Its beautiful and moving. You can just feel the magic of the moment she is describing. Other super hits include the slinky 'Sweet Georgia Brown', the peppy 'Pick Yourself Up' and the bittersweet 'There's A Lull In My Life'. Also, this Cd gives you alternative takes on songs and the rockin' bonus tracks 'Getaway and The Chase' and the classic 'Rock and Roll Waltz'. This is one of the records I play when I want to get into a good mood. It always makes me smile. Bottom line, Its a FANTASTIC album at a SUPER price. Don't miss it!"

"Anita O'Day is one of the greatest jazz singers to emerge from the 40's, and was and is the best bebop singer from the 50's till present. This re-issue of the lp PICK YOUSELF UP WITH ANITA is one of her best lp's and is highly reccomended as are all of her verves. HIGHLY RECOMENDED."
Hi friends - I've gone through some pretty heavy stuff these past couple months. One song that always gets me through is Stan's 60s remake of Early Autumn. It's all in there - love, sadness, beauty. Literally makes my heart swell. I love how you can hear his fingers hit the pads from the very beginning...
